About The Department

The Department of Library and Information Science at Northwest University, Sokoto was established alongside the University in 2022 as part of its commitment to academic excellence, innovation, and societal development. The Department plays a critical role in advancing literacy, knowledge management, and information access in an increasingly information-driven world.

Our academic programme is structured in line with the National Universities Commission (NUC) Core Curriculum Minimum Academic Standards (CCMAS, 2023) and is designed to produce competent, ethical, and technologically proficient information professionals. The curriculum combines strong theoretical foundations with practical and ICT-driven training to prepare graduates for diverse information environments, including academic and public libraries, archives, documentation centres, and digital information systems.

The Department adopts a practice-oriented approach that equips students with skills in information organization, digital librarianship, research methods, records management, and emerging information technologies. Through continuous curriculum development, dedicated academic staff, and structured practical experiences such as SIWES and project work, students are prepared to meet both national and global information challenges.

Guided by its vision to be a centre of excellence in Library and Information Science education and research, the Department remains committed to producing graduates who contribute meaningfully to education, research, governance, and sustainable knowledge development.

Message from the Head of Department

Welcome to the Department of Library and Information Science, Northwest University, Sokoto.

It is with great pleasure and a strong sense of responsibility that I present the Department to our students, staff, and stakeholders. The Department is dedicated to the delivery of quality teaching, learning, and research in accordance with the standards and guidelines of the National Universities Commission (NUC).

Our programmes are carefully designed to provide students with the academic knowledge, practical skills, and ethical grounding required to function effectively in modern library and information environments. In today’s knowledge-driven society, information professionals play a vital role in supporting education, research, innovation, and national development. The Department is therefore committed to producing graduates who are adaptable, innovative, and responsive to the dynamic information needs of society.
