The history of Unipix
Northwest University Sokoto (NWUS) was conceived to expand access to quality higher education in the north-west region of Nigeria and to complement national and regional educational goals. The idea for the university began taking shape around 2014, driven by the vision of its proprietor, Senator Aliyu Magatakarda Wamakko, to provide affordable, high-quality tertiary education to students from Sokoto and neighbouring states. A formal proposal was submitted to the National Universities Commission (NUC) in February 2020, and on 12 May 2022 the university received official approval to commence academic activities, making it one of Nigeria’s newest private universities. From its inception, NWUS has focused on student-centred learning and inclusive access, offering programmes across multiple faculties and a College of Health Sciences. The institution has rapidly achieved full accreditation for its academic programmes and opened admissions for the 2025/2026 session, positioning itself as a growing centre of academic excellence and innovation in the region.
